Was the title of a *1974* book edited by Stuart Piggott et alii. I can't find anything more recent in English *or* French that presents an overview of any substantial part of the whole except the Neolithic [1]. In particular, I finally took a decent look today at the table of contents of <Histoire de la Gaule (VIe s. av. J.-C. - Ier s. ap. J.-C.): une confrontation culturelle>, and have concluded at last that it is not an overview, but is in fact strictly about the "confrontation". So let me get this straight. The country whose archaeology includes so many of the Important Sites of Prehistory, and we've got to rely on a 30-year-old textbook? What have I missed? Joe Bernstein [1] I haven't read 'em, but to judge by the titles, see for the Neolithic <La France des dolmens et des sepultures collectives (4500-2000 avant J.-C.): bilans documentaires regionaux>, ed. Philippe Soulier, 1998. and more generally but less currently <Ancient France: Neolithic Societies and Their Landscapes, 6000- 2000 BC>, ed. Christopher Scarre, ?1983. -- Joe Bernstein, writer [EMAIL PROTECTED] <http://www.panix.com/~josephb/>
