I'm an old cook with apple trees and opinions.  I think apple desserts taste
better when fresh and warm, or at room temperature, and never refrigerate
them.   I think Louis is right.  Given baking, more than sugar content
though that helps, 24-36 hours without refrigeration is probably safe and if
there's anything left after a day and a half, the cook should check her
recipe or make smaller quantity.

I'm old enough to remember ice-boxes and have a son who is constantly
nagging me about getting leftovers into the refrigerator more quickly.
However, so far no husband, child or grandchild has had reason to
belly-ache!  :-)

I also think you owe your mother-in-law an apology!
