Why does an airfoil section work?

Can anyone explain why  airfoil section shape of a wing section
produces lift?

I would have expected that the curvature of the wing would do the
opposite to what it does; ie compress the air above as it pushes it
out the way, the increased pressure of the compressed air forcing the
wing downwards.
