Others in the past have said to use "Stop" as soon as the disk
loads, then "Menu". Does this not work on this disk? (Even if it
works, I still agree that the automatic ads are bad. I'm just
curious whether Universal has escalated this abomination to the next
level.)

If you do, please let us know what happens. While I agree with you
that this is unacceptable, I'd be surprised if a retailer agrees and
takes back an opened disk.
