I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all Pioneer
drives are limited to 2X because that's part of the DVD Forum -R spec,
apparently to discourage people from piracy by testing their patience ;>)

My LiteOn LDW 411S rips at 8X+ (exceeding 12X in the middle of a
single-layer disc, according to DVD Decrypter,) and burns at a little over
4X in both formats.

In the case of the Pioneer, it is a deliberate firmware limitation, nothing
to do with the capabilities of the hardware.
