Red Planet movie comes out squished.

I rented a copy of Red Planet on DVD and when I played it I got a letterbox
format (not the widescreen format with larger black bars above and below) with
tall, skinney people and oblong planets. I've run dozens of DVDs on my Pioneer
player and have never run into this.

Anybody know what's going on here?
