You're kiddin', right? DVD Media prices are constantly dropping, and
have so over the last year, and the year before that. Occaisonally
they go up, but only for a brief period during shortages or high
demand, then they go down again. As new, fast media is available, the
price of the older media is dropped, sometimes dramatically. If you're
happy with the performance of the media and burn times, then it gets
even better. However, if you have to have the fastest and latest DVD
burners, then the media price keeps pace (much more expense
immediately after its release, then slowly drops off). So, when 8x
media becomes available, it'll be high priced (as compared to 2x or
4x), to go along with the new family of recorders. Then the 4x and 2x
will get even cheaper.

And cheaper does not mean less reliable. I use nothing but Ritek's,
and they're one of the cheapest media out there, and have been one of
the most reliable. Then turn around and buy TDK, and I've seen people
with problems. Price doesn't guarantee anything.

That "Grading" of media is a crock. Tell me where the manufacturer
posts anything that says one media is grade x, and another is grade x.
They don't. Some distributors and resellers of dvd media put these
"grade" labels on the discs that don't mean a thing.

To get back to the original question, no, DVD-R/+R media is not made
of the same materials as CDR media. The tolerances for the media is
much, much higher or restrictive, so you have to be selective on your
media brand for DVD burners. With most CD burners, you can pretty much
use any brand and be okay.
