The Pioneer firmware is locked at a 2.1x max read speed!!  I read somewhere
that this was to sicourage pirating DVDs, though not sure this is the real
reason.  Anyway, if you jump over to

http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org  and download the modified firmware, (the direct
link follows)

http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/DVR-106D%20v1.07%20-%20RPC-1%20+%202xDVD-R%20+%2012xRip.zip

this will modify your 06 to rip at up to 12x.  I purchased an 06 about three
weeks ago, installed the modified firmware, and have made about thirty
succesful rips and burns since.
