I don't know exactly what you were seeing but some studios do offer special pressings of movies with no extras that use *all* of the available disc space for the film to reduce the compression as much as possible. Columbia's Superbit (http://www.superbitdvd.com/) titles come to mind... There is a high def playback only VHS format out there right now as well. It's 1080i.
