I buy 1X/2X/4X media that specifically says it works with my DMR-E30 and it
works fine. Maybe there is some 4X media out there that does not work with the
DMR-E30, but I just look at the compatibility chart. After at least 100 DVD's,
both 4X and 2X, I have never to this day seen an error message or lost a disk.
I have never cleaned it either, but I did buy the Panasonic cleaner which I
should use one of these days. My advice is to follow the instructions and the
compatibility charts. 

I also love the fact that Panasonic only sells 2X DVD-R on their site, and
that Panasonic recommends TDK (which is 2X and in fact some of it is 4X) and
that Panasonic includes a 2X DVD-RAM in their packaging.
