Yes it is :)

Once the DVD / VCR Combo player will allow you to watch a DVD while
also recording a TV programme (not all combo players allow this) then
it will work fine.

The new Sony SLV-D900 will allow direct dubbing also but only if the
disk is not 'copyright protected'. If say for instance you had a DVD
of something you burned to DVD-r of the net - then you can use the
direct dubbing feature to copy this with no fuss.

However, if you wish to record DVDs that you rent then you will need
to pass the out going signal from the DVD part of the combo machine
through a 'macrovision killer' (there are a whole bunch outthere) and
then run it into the 'input' of the VCR part of the Combo machine.

The Combo will not be able to tell the difference between the DVD
signal and just an ordinary cable / aerial signal. Just tune the DVD
signal into the VCR as you would any other TV station.

Or you could just get a chipped DVD player and a nice 4 Head Nicam
VCR. The Sony combo is good though.
