It's a typical ir remote.  You don't have to turn the E80 on to get it to
timer-record a program.  It is always "on" in standby mode.  You just
program it to record the program you want.  If you mean, will the E80 turn
on the Direct TV receiver, no, it won't.  If that has to be turned on to
record from it, then you'd have to leave it on or program it to turn itself
on, if that's possible.
