Re: Sansui DVD-Recorder-VCR combination unit--any good?

I really doubt what other have said about this topic by trashing the idea of
DVDR-VHS combo units. I frankly find this rather appropriate if you have a
lot of VHS tapes to dupe into DVDR. However, when all that is done, the VHS
slot seemed rather redundant say two years down the road when DVDR with hard
disk coupled with DVD popularity will very likely replace all VHS uses.. VHS
will be another Beta tape story...

If you want a longer term solution, yes, by all means get a DVDR stand alone
unit (preferably pay a bit more for the hard disk DVDR models). All you
gotta do is to add a VHS VCR deck to the dupe setup, then later trash the
VCR completely.

As for Sansui, they are relatively not that well known in the market
anymore. But I do not think that they produce lousy products. Buy one and
try it out with your own DVDR disks. Record a few VHS tapes and see how it
goes. If not happy, just return it to Sears for a refund. No questions
asked.

I myself have a Philips DVDR unit that was bought for $399. I am quite happy
with duping all my video tapes into DVDs, though I find Philips, like almost
every European manufacturer, seems to give consumers a very complicated on
screen setup and menuing system. But one get around that, everything is a
breeze. I cannot imagine a Japanese manufacturer like Sansui will fall into
this trap. I can expect them to design their products with simplicity as the
key so that everyone can be a no-brainer using it.

In short, take a test drive yourself with teh Sansui unit, buy it, test it,
like it, keep it. If you don't like it, US consumer protection laws allow
you to return for a full refund from your neighborhood Sears store for a
complete refund.
