The ones released in 1997 and subsequent are what Lucas had in mind 
originally; the originals had been edited for length at the insistence 
of the studio.

Of course, there were changes; originally, Jaba the Hut was going to be 
a human being, and if he had not been cut from the original of Episode 
4, he would have been human in 5 and 6.

The footage of him walking with Han Solo out of the bar had been saved, 
so when Lucas got the 1997 version ready for release, he included that 
footage, but replaced the human-actor Jaba with the CGI worm Jaba, 
keeping the original dialog.
