OK, this is sad... I've looked at the consumer level movie making systems and none of them really pan out. Based on the info from ULEAD, the SE version I've got is reasonably complete (I've got SE DVD). Pinnacle has better sound editing options than VideoStudio, but has it's bug issues. ULEAD, it sounds like also has it's problems with bugs, but the current version has been out long enough, I've not encountered them yet. Microsoft's Movie Maker has a slicker, better thought out, faster and more complete interface than either Pinnacle or ULEAD, but it doesn't have all the options available (though it does have some nice titling effects I'll be using). I also really like the fact that Microsoft includes the date/time the DV video was shot (this is included on the video information captured and has been requested of Pinnacle for ages, but they don't apparently believe in listening to a large number of customers). It looks like I'll be using Pinnacle, will ONLY upgrade if absolutely necessary to fix a serious defect (and will have extremely good backups should I decide to upgrade). I'll be using Microsoft to create some video segments including titles and will also use Microsoft to get the date/time I shot video ssegments. Not sure if I'll use VideoStudio SE or not - perhaps if there's a need, but there's no obvious draw. I wish there were a consumer version of video editing software that covered all bases, but sadly there isn't and I simply cannot justify a $300 package for editing home videos to put on a DVD. I'll roll over to the inevitable and admit that Microsoft will likely get their software covering the majority of my needs by the 3rd release of movie maker, then I'll likely use it exclusively. I wish that weren't the case, but hey, perhaps the folks at ULEAD and Pinnacle have given up and decided they will not be able to compete in the low-end market.
