Im Getting A DVD Player for Xmas

I found out Im getting a DVD Player for Xmas. I don't rent movies. I
have over 50 movie channels on my digital cable service. plus HBO and
Showtime ON Demand. But I asked for a DVD Player due to the fact I
couldn't think of anything else. Can somebody tell me what I will see
different from a VHS movie or on cable? Just what are these extras and
features they talk about. I can check out DVDs at my library. Does
anybody have both movie channels and  watch DVDs?
