Based on some suggestions, I went ahead and ordered the SIMA SED-CM. 

I hesitate to ask, but for a no-frills automatic macrovision-wiping
product (priced at $39+), was this a good move? I should have checked
more reviews before purchase, because it seems like a mixed bag.

Reviews much appreciated -- good stuff, bad stuff, in between,
