The Week's Picks and Pans, plus Awards of Dubious Merit
Standard Disclaimers: Please set appropriate followups. Recommendation does
not factor in price. Not all books will have arrived in your area this week.
Yay, Fall break! I can sleeeeeep. Rants, Capsules can be found on my
homepage, http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/Rants
Capsules:
The regular Capsule reviews of books I actually buy. If I get a book
late due to distributor foulups or whatever, I'll put it in the Missing
section.

Transformers Armada #16: Dreamwave - Penultimate issue. And it just
goes to show ya, "Guy who doesn't have a toy is first to die." (Yes, the
name goes with a toy, but not an Armada one, and he doesn't look like the G1
toy of the name.) Colors continue to be muddy and oversaturated or dark by
turns, which makes it harder to follow the story. Still, the main conflict
of the issue was quite cool, and I actually didn't expect it to end the way
it did. All this, and Cy-Kill and Cop-Tur, sorta. }-> Recommended. $2.95
Transformers: War Within Dark Ages #1 (of 6): Dreamwave - Andrew Wildman
is back! Sadly, covered in heavy inks and heavier colors. Anyway, while we
only get snapshots for much of it, Furman establishes an interesting view of
how the war goes without Prime or Megatron, how everyone breaks into multiple
subfactions. The mystic side of Transformers is also played up in this
series, which I kinda like. Recommended. $2.95
Transformers G1 v2 #6 (of 6): Dreamwave - Between Mick's storytelling
and the trademark murky coloring, it's not exactly easy to follow this issue,
especially with huge chunks of exposition that aren't always laid out so that
it's clear which bubbles come in what order. Still, it does all come out in
the end, and a new G1 continuity is made manifest. Mildly recommended.
$2.95
[snip, and because it's Furman]
Necrowar #1-3: Dreamwave - Do I even need to say the coloring is murky
and oversaturated anymore, or is it enough to say it's from Dreamwave? Mind
you, given the theme for this series, a certain amount of murky darkness is
de rigeur. Ironically, the series went on hiatus before I could get any
issues at all, due to low orders. And if it comes off hiatus, I don't think
I'll bother picking it up. It feels like it'd take a dozen or so more issues
to get much of anywhere, given the slow, teasing pace of this book. On the
other hand, the Big Secret seems to be getting telegraphed in loud dits and
dahs. Mildly recommended. $2.95 each.
