At the Bankers' Classic, Pittsburgh played Oregon State in the first
match, and then the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) played
the host team, the University of the Pacific, in the second match.
Results are down a page, as usual, in case anyone is trying to avoid
them.
Due to the holiday (the day after Thanksgiving, for those of you not
in the U.S.A., is a vacation day for just about everyone outside the
retail trade - it is the biggest shopping day of the year, however),
traffic was pretty light going over to Stockton, except for the
normal stop-and-go in Tracy. Coming back, I tried to keep it to
70, but had to keep pulling over to the right lane to let folks
pass me. However, I didn't see anyone going over 100 (MPH - that
comes to about 150 km/hr, I think) like I did the last time; on the
other hand, I think that was a Saturday night. If I get back to
Stockton tomorrow, perhaps it will be different on the way home.
Ray Mink and John Grout also made it to the tournament, both came
over and said hello.
I guess that's it - page down for the results.

OK. Here goes.
Oregon State beat Pittsburgh, 30-22, 16-30, 30-26, 30-25. The
side-out scores were 12-5, 15-2, 12-9, 13-8. Description of this
match follows the description of the second match (which was shorter,
if you need a reason).
Pacific beat UAB, 30-17, 30-28, 30-27. The side-out scores were
15-3, 13-11, 13-11.
UAB played: Bilun Gunal (S), Lindsay Carnohan (OPP), Cassi Ociesa
(MB; Meredith Walker served for her), Karen Boyd (MB), Martina
Shields (OH), and Breanne Swenson (OH). Libero Brianna Galvin
played for Walker.
UOP played: Hayley Anderson (S; Allison Ianni played fifteen rallies
in the front row in game three), Joanna Rentz (OPP; Sidney Bennett
played the last 14 rallies of game one, and the first 31 of game two;
Rentz returned in the back row, but Bennett played the front row and
served through the end of game two. Bennett started game three, but
Rentz played nearly all the back row - and came in for one play in
the front row after a UAB ace, after the side-out, Rentz served an
ace of her own, and stayed in to finish the match with the last three
rallies in the front row - getting the last two kills), Jennifer
Joines (MB), Susan Drollinger (MB), Ashley Groothuis (OH; Molly
Mordaunt served to start game two, but Groothuis returned at 1-5 and
finished the match), and Stevie Mussie (OH). Libero Kristen Kalend
played for Drollinger.
Scoring (UOP score first; UAB served first in games one and three):
Game One:
,1-0 3-0 ,,4-1 5-1 ,,6-2 9-2 ,,10-3 13-3 ,13-4 13-5 ,14-5 16-5
,,,17-7 [UAB got their only first serve side-out on a service
error].
,,[another UOP service error] ,,[finally - Swenson got a kill for
an immediate side-out] ,,20-10 20-12 [another Swenson kill for
the side-out, then an ace on the back line for Swenson, and a kill
by Shields before Joines got a kill from the back row to end the
run] ,21-12 22-12 ,,,,,24-15.
,,,,,27-17 30-17 [the side-out was a Joines kill on a slide play,
then a UAB hitting error, an ace for Joines, and a Drollinger kill
of an overpass finished it].
Game Two:
,,,1-2 1-5 [Boyd got a kill on a slide play for the side-out, then
a UOP ball handling error and two UOP hitting errors, before
Anderson went over on two for the side-out] ,,2-6 2-7 [a UOP net
violation on offense, after Shields' kill for the side-out. UOP
got the ball back on another Anderson kill on the second hit]
,3-7 4-7 ,,5-8 6-8 ,6-9 6-10 [it might have become 6-11, but the
down ref called a ball down when UAB attempted a pancake dig. If
I remember correctly, the up ref did not stop the play, and UAB
got a set off the pancake, and killed it - but then the up ref
saw the down ref's signal, and called it a side-out to UOP]
,7-10 8-10 ,8-11 8-12 ,9-12.
11-12 ,11-13 11-14 ,,12-15 12-16 ,,13-17 13-18 ,14-18 17-18

Groothuis for the side-out, then Joines's serve was passed over
the net and blocked down - UAB's dig attempt went out of bounds
to make it 28-27. Joines' next serve landed just inside the
back line for game point. A hitting error gave the Blazers the
ball] ,,30-28 [Drollinger's kill on a slide play ended it].
Game Three:

and then got another kill (as UAB went into the net, but it did
not matter) for the match].

OSU vs Pittsburgh
-----------------
Pittsburgh played: Lindsey Macke (S; Azadeh Boroumand played the last
half of game one, about a quarter of game three, and nine plays in
the front row in game four), Abby Fechhelm (OPP; Kim Norris replaced
her for four points in the front row starting at 18-21, and came back
for the last six points of the match, four in the back row and
two in the front), April Puzauskas (MB; Jessica McDonald came in the
first time in each game, and the second time in game three, to play
left front on serve receive. That is a new specialty on me),
Megan Miller (MB; Norris served for her in game two, and played
through the back row the first time; Norris served the last time in
game three as wel), Wendy Hatlestad (OH), and Sarah Rollman (OH).
Libero Megan McGrane played for the middles, except for the one time
Norris played through the back row.
Oregon State played: Laura Collins (S; Desma Stovall played 12 points
in game two), Anne Watts-Roberts (OPP), Abby Windell (MB; Brittany
Cahoon was in for two plays early in game four), Amanda Eggert (MB;
Taylor Studzinski served the last time in game three and the second
and third times in game four), Karah Rhoades (OH; Katelyn Healy
played about a third of game three and the last third of game four -
at least, I don't have any notes saying Rhoades returned), and
Allison Lawrence (OH). Libero K. C. Frederic played for the middles.

it; Pittsburgh served first in games one and three):

Watts-Roberts came upt the middle for a kill to reach match point.
Hatlestad got a kill for a side-out, but Watts-Roberts got another
kill to finish it].
That's it from here. I hope the NCAA notices that the seventh place
(after USC, Stanford, UCLA, Cal, Washington, and Arizona, I think
the Beavers are ahead of Washington State and Arizona State for
seventh; Oregon was 0-18 in conference, so I know they're tenth)
team in the Pac-10 beat the Big East conference champion.
More tomorrow - I am definitely going to the Stanford - Notre Dame
match; I'm not sure if I will make it back to Stockton for the
rest of the Banker's Classic.
Take care.
