As usual, the results are down a page, in case anyone is attempting
to avoid them.
It is a chilly evening in Santa Clara County - we're expecting the
temperature to drop into the twenties tonight (Fahrenheit; that
comes out roughly to somewhere between -7 and -1 Celsius). The cat
refused to stay inside - his bed is in the sunroom, and he wanted
to go out there. Well, he's got a fur coat - he may be too hot
inside.
But as for volleyball, it was a hot time in the Leavey Center.
Page down for the results.

That should be far enough.
Santa Clara won, 30-22, 28-30, 23-30, 30-25, 15-12. The side-out
scores were 15-8, 13-14, 9-16, 12-7, 5-3. Again, the fans get
cheated by rally scoring.
It was a very entertaining match. Both sides were digging well, and
many of the broken plays turned into excellent plays. One stands out
in my (unreliable) memory - the ball was popped up to just behind the
Lions' setter, who turned, and managed to get an elbow on the ball,
putting it up high enough for a back row player to get to and play
(I forget if that was the second or third hit). Another play stands
out as well - an excellent call by the referee, when the Bronco's
libero made an overhand dig inside the ten foot line, and the setter
decided to go over on two - that's illegal, and the ref called it
immediately (to the dismay of most of the crowd, who probably had
no idea what went wrong). It was senior night, and Santa Clara
continued their tradition of giving flowers to the opponent's seniors,
and then recognizing their own seniors and their parents, finishing by
playing a nice video which included some pictures from various years -
I didn't recognize which of the seniors it was, but she was getting
her picture taken with volleyballs from about two years old.
Yu-Ping Wang came over before the match - he was down in the area
(something about another athletic event with an odd-shaped ball),
but said he'd have come over anyway for tonight's match. He had
printed a whole packet of notes on both teams, which made for good
reading while the warmups were getting started.
Loyola Marymount played: Nicole Oehlman (S), Dina DeBernardi (OPP;
Jody Carlson played most of the back row, but did not serve),
Tiana Newsome (MB; Elizabeth Samson came in to serve at the end of
game one), Kelli Nerison (MB), Sandy Krone (OH; Krista
Houseman took over in game two. Tiffany Self played most of the back
row for both of them, but served only the first time in game one -
she served long, and did not get a chance to try again), and Kealani
Kimball (OH). Libero Jacene Dimson played for the middles. Megan
Wooton was on the bench.
Santa Clara played: Kelli Sousa (S), Cassie Perret (OPP), Becky
Potter (MB), Becky Biniek (MB; Lexie Bothman served and played back
row), Toni Muratore (OH), and Kim McGiven (OH). Libero Kristen Luxton
played for the outside hitters. Megan Pura, Rachel Greenberg, and
Nora Miller were on the bench. It seems that Alyssa Lantz and Kelli
Walsh have been injured - they were not in uniform. That would make
five Broncos injured this year - but they are still playing well:
they took #4 Pepperdine to five games last night, and scored three
more points than the Waves, who won 21-30, 33-31, 30-24, 21-30, 15-8.
Scoring (Santa Clara score first; the Broncos must have won both coin
tosses, because the Lions served first in games one, three, and five):

Broncos got a side-out on a Perret kill, but Newsome got a roll
shot to fall for the game].
Game 4:
,,1-1 3-1 ,,4-2 6-2 [The Lions got a break here - a late buzzer
sounded after the serve had been mishandled, and the referee
called for a replay; at least, I think the buzzer was after
the misplay] ,,7-3 9-3 ,,,,,11-6 11-7 ,12-7.

,,,,,,28-23 29-23 ,29-24 29-25 ,30-25 [at 27-23, Muratore came
through the middle to get a kill for a side-out, and the Broncos
then got to game point on Muratore's ace. The Lions sided out on
Newsome's kill on a slide play, and then got another point on a
Newsome block. Biniek hit one off the block and out of bounds
for the game].
Game 5:
,1-0 2-0 ,2-1 2-3 ,3-3 4-3 ,,5-4 6-4 ,,7-5 8-5 [a Muratore block
brought us to the side change, and then LMU called time-out]
,,,,,10-8.
,11-8 12-8 [Perret's serve hit the back line as the Lions called
"out"] ,12-9 12-10 ,,,,,15-12 [Santa Clara called time-out after
Newsome got a kill on a quick set for 12-10. Potter then got
a kill off a one-handed quick set from Sousa, but a service error
gave the ball back to the Lions at 13-11. Muratore hit line for
match point, but Newsome put down another quick set to delay the
end. Muratore finally ended it on her third hard spike of the
rally].
Whew! That's it for tonight. More from Santa Clara on Tuesday,
after the Stanford match.
Good night!
