I'd heard people say this, and although I haven't done any long bike
rides on flat courses I think I have to agree. I was forced to do two
long (17-18 mi) runs on a dead flat course last summer, and I was a lot
more sore than normal. You end up using the same muscles nonstop when
it's flat; some hills let you change things up and stay fresher.
