Re: Where are the fans?

 I started watching sumo in 1965 while stationed in Japan with the Air
 Force, and have been following it ever since (we have the TV JAPAN option
with
 DISH  TV).
=====

I commend you on your steadfastness. You are a TRUE SUMO FAN.

=====
The thing that has struck me lately is the sparseness of the crowds,
particularly during the weekdays. I NEVER recall half-empty arenas in the
past, even on weekdays.
=====

It has happened before. SUMO popularity is cyclical.

=====
Forgive me if I am touching upon something that has already been
discussed, possibly many times ... I'm new to this group.
the characters don't seem to be there - sumo needs top consistent contenders
fighting it out for each title - not one yokozuna who people don't seem to
like and a load of second tier fighters.
=====

They are there. It is society and the fans whose perceptions have changed.
