My perception interesting? You're talking about baseball or softball as you want or expect it to be with the new rule. I'm referring to how softball is played now. Fielder camps out in front of bag to wait for throw. Runner knows she must find some way around and does so. Safety? I've watched about 4,000 softball games. Most injuries are from tipped balls into batter's face, then comebackers or shots to the corners, then bad hops, then fielders colliding. After that it gets pretty random, freaky stuff. I've seen a few twisted ankles from sliding into bag too hard. I've seen no injury that I deem attributable to the current rule and I have seen an awful lot of exciting plays because of it(ie head first back-door slide around the back of the catcher with a couple of fingers making contact with the plate). Old rule is safe because fielder concentrates on catching the ball and runner on getting around the fielder to the bag/plate. New rule? I fear many collisions with runners now steaming straight into the bag and fielders concentrating on catching the ball and moving into the bag at the same time--especially during transition while the players get used to the new way. Jerr.
