The position of the defender is irrelevant to obtaining an out without the ball, so I don't see any advantage or disadvantage before or now. I caught for years and never blocked a basepath without the ball, nor did I ever miss the opportunity to get an out because I received the ball in front of the basepath. It's not difficult. You position yourself to receive the ball facing the runner. You accept the ball from your right side and allow the ball to take you into the runner's path. Mike.
