It seems that fielder is at a distinct disadvantage in terms of where to position herself acting as a target for the fielder, If throw is taken in front of basepath, fielder has her back to runner. If throw is taken behind basepath, it could hit runner and in either case forces fielder to move toward, reach, sweep, dive, lunge etc to reach runner unless ball is received well in advance of runner's arrival. Usually plays at the plate are to close to receive the ball that far in advance of runners arrival. Jason
