An indoor quad skate typically has a shorter wheelbase (from midheel to the ball of the foot) and uses harder and usually a bit smaller wheels. A true outdoor quad skate has the front axles mounted under the base of the big toe (more stable). The rear axles can be anywhere in the region between the ankle joint and midheel, depending on personal preference and the type of skating you do. The wheels are softer (78A - 82A Durometer hardness) and bigger (you can usually fit up to 70 mm diameter on most trucks). The softer wheels grip the asphalt better than hard ones plus the bigger the wheel the smoother the ride. As far as boots go there is no real difference. Most outdoor skaters use a lower cut speed boot or hockey boots as opposed to high top artistic or figure type boots. There is more freedom of movement which makes things less tiring if you are skating long distances. Toe stops and heel brakes are a matter of personal preference. The majority of European and African quad skaters don't use either, relying on T-stops and slide type stops. RollerSkater Dave http://www.outdoorquads.isportsdot.com/
