great road skating in the Hudson valley NY

I've been finding some wonderful skating out on the roads of the Hudson
River valley of New York state:
 - smooth pavement
 - pretty farms and animals and orchards
 - roads with little vehicle traffic or wide lanes + shoulders
 - big views of the river and mountains
 - reasonable state law support for road skating
 - public transportation support, especially trains
I've started to put some stories and route ideas and links up on the web:

Two road network areas around Columbia county and northern Dutchess county
are especially
remarkable: the Wassaic - Amenia - Millerton - Copake Falls area:

(reachable by train from New York City to Wassaic)
Even though the season is supposed to be over, a couple of us went out for
another great 47 km loop tour there last Sunday.
And the Tivoli - Germantown - Livingston - Red Hook area:

Big one-way tours supported by trains are another special feature of the
Hudson Valley. The amazing Amit Mehta pioneered this by skating from New
York City all the way to Albany in less than three days, then taking the
Amtrak train home. Next he skated from Albany - Rensselaer to Lake George
to Saratoga.

I'm proud to say that I advised Amit on some of his route ideas -- based on
Sharon and my adventures on a bicycle -- even before I owned a pair of
skates. Finally this Fall season when I got into skating myself, I tried
Albany - Rensselaer to Glens Falls and Lake George -- and it was great. See
both our stories at

For other exploratory ideas about one-way train-supported routes, see

Lots more skate exploring to be done. I'm eager to hear about more skating
resources and stories and ideas for the Hudson Valley that I can link to on
the SK8HV website.
