Re: How do you measure SPEED on skates?

Last summer I bought the Timex Speed and Distance GPS watch and have been
very pleased with it. Since I skate, bike or run almost every day, the
convenience of having only to deal with the GPS pickup device on my arm has
been great. No switching of computers, wires or magnetic devices.

It has also helped in coaching cross country teams because I can accurately
measure courses, mile markers and other stuff. It also calculates pace in
minutes per mile, which is a great benefit to runners who like to work on a
set pace.

As far as accuracy, I've found it to be as good as the bicycle cyclometers
I've used. One course I measured using a bicycle cyclometer, a measuring
wheel and the GPS system and the GPS was within three meters of the
measuring wheel over 5 kilometers.

The system is kind of pricey, around $250 or so at Walmart. The newest
system includes a heart rate monitor, which could be a real boon to cross
training. The new system falls into the $300 plus range.
