not suggesting that the system forces the cream to the top - though it did
look that way from my description.  I merely suggest that because there is
a broad base it MUST contain a few more ambitious players than a narrower
base.

I wholly accept that many (many) fine clubs exist to fill a niche which is
both sporting AND sociological.  One has only to witness the position of
the village rugby club in Wales once upon a time. I also accept that they
fill those niches admirable with little ambition to move anywhere.
