Higher Saxboards with wing riggers CAN be acheived if you accept a very
high
rig. Perhaps that's the plan?? Might not be so daft imho.
Well, you'd have to raise the rig by ~4cm, just to bring the saxboards
back to a normal level. Would you row effectively at a 22-23cm work
height?
Then you'd be bashing your hands against the rigger cross-frame over
your feet.
My point was that there are rational ways to deal with the likely
problems, but the signs are that in some teams the approach is less than
perfectly rational.
Why not make it the Cornish gig Olympics?
There speaks the voice of reason. Although in the 1896 Olympics, as
David Henderson has reminded us, despite using fairly rugged craft they
were unable to complete the rowing events due to adverse weather.
Why not take a leaf out of Virgil's Aeneid, Book V? An interesting
race, one cox heaved out of his boat for timid steering, some damaged
riggers & oars, a magnificent finishing spurt to win the race, & a bit
of divine intervention into the bargain. They used a natural course,
raced without umpires, suffered no boat weighing nonsense, & no one wore
a blazer & tie.
