Re: Scullers Head

When the Womens Head was cancelled in 2002 we got all the entry money
returned to us by the committee. Given the comments about costs and
insurance, I would assume that the Womens head is insured in the event
of cancellation.

Perhaps it is time for people organising events to outlay the costs
clearly to all competitors - most rowers would agree that some profit
is fair, for the ongoing development of the sport - whether that
profit goes into improving the facilities for the actual organisation
of the race (regatta or head) or benfit of the club whose members
organised the event. I think there are a lot of misconceptions about
'greedy entry secretaries' when in reality most events only make a
slim profit.

By the way, I loved the comment about the 'low slung wire' to record
times as boats cross the start line - I think the potential for that
wire to drop into the water, or catch some unfortunate rower around
the neck is quite great! Not to mention that the height of the river
(on the tideway) changes dramatically between the first boat and the
last as the tide runs out.

Having been on a few timing teams I know that human error is a
problem, but I can't yet see a practical solution that matches the
chips that runners wear on their shoes. Maybe the ARA should
encourage the co-ordination of how timing is done by all the major
heads.
