I think the point we are missing here is that this is a race on the tideway and as such, the conditions can be anything from flat calm to white horses (or as often as not a mixture of both!). The entrants involved should be aware of this and in certain conditons it is the skill and technique of some scullers who will attain better finishing positions as opposed to those who may apply pure brute power in easier conditions I understand from an official that a previous winner of the event did actually venture he could see the reasons behind the cancellation but he stated he had raced and won the event in similar conditons in the past. Whilst there has been some talk on this thread regarding a shorter course, why didnt the organisers consider delaying the start for say 30 minutes? Even if the wind had not subsided, the tide would have dropped which may have reduced the difficulties at certain points on the course Martin Carr
