perhaps a much better option, though I'm sure they have their reasons.
Because in the time it would take to transport the timing teams,
officials, marshalls and umpires from Putney to Hammersmith the scullers
out on the water would have been exposed to another hour or so's bad
weather? And there was a very obvious risk of the weather getting worse,
not better.
Because it wasn't in the safety plan, so the post-finish pen would not
have been suitably covered or organised.
Because the authorities (who had approved the safety plan) would not
have had a chance to be consulted.
Because that would have meant the post-finish marshalling would have
been around/under/past Hammersmith Bridge - just at the point that the
Southerly wind was starting to whip up the water.
Because, moments after the race had been called off, someone did
actually go in at Hammersmith - so it wasn't going to be as flat as we
all would have liked it!
