>Friday night - The Assistant Commissioner for football, who's never worked the
sport to my knowledge, and the Assistant Commissioner who acts as the
Officials' Liaison, a retired D-1 referee, are just aghast when a 30+ year
veteran from our association lines up on the wide side of the field, instead of
on the qb's passing arm, before every play as the R in a 5-man
crew during a Class 5A semi-final game. >
Although I'm not on the committee, I *do* have some indirect input into the
Alabama Official's Manual. Our manual had the "passing arm side" in it for
exactly ONE season, before wiser heads prevailed.
It now states that the R shall line up "in the best possible position that will
allow you to carry out your responsibilities."
As Scott points out, many times that will be the wide side. On obvious passing
downs, or when the ball is in the middle of the field, I will get on the PA
side.
