This is how bad Micro-Management By State has become
in Colorado ......
Friday night - The Assistant Commissioner for football, who's
never worked the sport to my knowledge, and the Assistant
Commissioner who acts as the Officials' Liaison, a retired
D-1 referee, are just aghast when a 30+ year veteran from our
association lines up on the wide side of the field, instead of
on the qb's passing arm, before every play as the R in a 5-man
crew during a Class 5A semi-final game.
What these Bozo's fail to recognize is:
- The passer's arm is a tv mechanic for 6- and 7-man crews,
in spite of what the Fed Officials Manual may mistakenly
recommend.
- The inbounds lines are closer together in tv football, where
6- and 7-man crews are used.
- There is FAR LESS passing in the HS game, than on tv where
6- and 7-man crews are used.
- Whether they believe or not, a 5-man R needs to help trail the
sweep when there's only one official covering the sideline.
Saturday afternoon - These same two representatives witness the
following play at the Class 1A - 11 Man Championship Game, worked
by a different 5-man crew:
Play 1: On the last timed down of the 1st period, K1 punts, and the
kick bounces past the lone receiver, R1, at R's 20. K2 blocks
R1 from the side at the ankles, causing him fall to down and
touch the ball. K3 subsequently recovers and advances;
whereupon, the BJ, from his position ON the HL's sideline,
follows him to goal line and signals a TD.
Ruling: First, guess how many minutes it supposedly took to sort this out.
Second, guess what their final ruling was.
Third, guess which grievous offense will get all the air-time, and
which will be forgotten, at next year's State Clinic.
Sad, isn't it? :^(
Heck, we didn't even get CLOSE to this in our Class 1A - 11 Man
semi-final game last week. ;^)
