But Mike, it's TRUE for HS & College football. A runner is down (and the ball
is dead) when any part of his body other than a foot or hand contacts the
ground. If the ball subsequently comes loose, it's not a fumble since the play
is already over.
Only in the NFL, where a runner must be downed by contact, can the ground
"cause" a fumble.
