Tom, Shifter cart racing is very big out here, and in other parts of the country. Tony Kart is a very popular brand around here, sells for over 10K new, over 5K used, reaches speeds of well over 100 mph. Come with Honda, Rotax, Vortex, Kawasaki and Yamaha watercooled motors. There are several different brands to choose from, all priced over $7K. There are viturally dozens of different Karting clubs throughout the country. Classes for every age group. The International Karting Federation (IKF) is the most prominate sanctioning body in America, but certainly not the only body to choose from. You can find out more by surfing the web. It is not difficult to find something local to your area, then go attend an event to see what they offer.
BTW, I have a nice 100cc Comet powered Emmick, non-shifter, 65 mph Kart for sale, with 2 new engines (1 spare Yamaha motor, complete with carb and clutch), Spares include, kart stand, tire bead breaker, sprokets, and elecrtic starter and misc tools and pieces. $1500.00 for all of it. Great condition, never bent or wrecked.
So, you see, an entry level racing cart can be fairly cheap, but I also know people who race for championships that spend well over 50K per year doing it.
It is not all that "layed back" of a sport though. It can be very intense.

Speaking of shifter carts, is there a seniors class for this? I've always been interested but had neither the time nor the money. Now I have both but have advanced in years a bit (LOL). Is there a good site for information on both the racing aspects and equipment needed/cost? I still love PWC's but would like to add another competitive hobby and I broke far too many bonex in motorcross many years ago and so want something a little tamer. Thanks for any info.
