A few years ago, I was watching a Red Wings game on ESPN, and one of the commentators mentioned that the Red Wings (and perhaps a few other NHL teams as well) had developed a new technique to sharpen skate blades without cutting skin. It was a certain shape the hollow of the blade was cut. It would still enable skating, but the chances of someone getting seriously injured by an errant skate blade were seriously reduced. Has anyone else heard about this? If so, have more (or all) NHL teams picked up this new skating sharpening technique? Is this particular skate sharpening technique more expensive than regular techniques? How widespread has this new technique become (i.e., has it filtered down to the level of house and recreational leagues yet)?
