Even by his own admission.

But he learned a great deal as an assistant to Paul Brown in 
Cincinnati.  PB was not an 80's coach, but he ranks up there with the 
best with some of his earlier non-NFL teams who blew NFL teams out 
regularly.  Also took Bengals to playoffs in their first or second 
year (first IIRC).
