Letters in the Halifax Chronicle Herald

Below are a couple of letters from the "Voice of the People" section of the Chronicle Herald, Halifax's largest daily newspaper.   The first from an obvious idiot, and the second from a well spoken critic.  I think you may know the second writer.  lol.   The first one appeared on November 24, the second should be in the paper on December 4th or 5th.  I'm sure you will find them interesting and might even have liked to add to the second one.  Feel free to pass this along to anyone that you think might be interested.
The following URL will take you to the letter below, but I have posted it in full anyway.

Worthless football

I recently heard a local sports commentator suggest that it was time the Canadian Football League expanded to the Maritimes, in particular Nova Scotia.

Why would any hard-working Nova Scotian spend their hard-earned money watching NFL wannabes, untalented Canadian players play football on a field the size of Texas?

Imagine spending your money watching two men kick a white-striped ball back and forth because the rules stipulate only three downs to move the ball 10 yards.

I think it's time this commentator packed his bags and headed to CFL hotbeds such as Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and Edmonton. And why is the CFL so popular in these places? If you had to choose between watching the CFL and hay growing, what would you choose?

A postscript: This is to the CFL fans writing in, commenting on lopsided Super Bowls. The Super Bowl is about all the great games leading to that final game. One close score in the Grey Cup does not make up for a full season of worthless football.

Tom Decker, Dartmouth

And of course, my subtle response to this idiot.

The CFL's Alive and Well

I am writing in response to the letter from Tom Decker regarding the potential expansion of the Canadian Football League into Nova Scotia. Usually his type of drivel is reserved for internet bulletin boards where it would be considered by most as a troll. I've waited almost a full week after reading, sort of a cooling off period. Having just returned from my ninth Grey Cup game vacation, I was more than surprised at the negativity of his comments. I can only wonder if he's ever seen a real football game or has just been swallowed up by the hype of the NFL propaganda machine. If it involves more money, it must be better eh Tom. Had he seen a game, he might have noticed that two men kicking a ball back and forth is not particularly commonplace but even if it were, it might be more entertaining than a 9-6 final score after watching 40 tedious 2-yard running plays. Frankly, if you need four downs to move the ball ten yards, you're just not trying. There are an unending number of ways to debate this, but Tom has likely fallen asleep watching another scintillating Sea hawks game by now.  Suffice to say that there are fans here in Nova Scotia more than willing to plunk down their hard earned dollars to see Canadian players play a Canadian game.  I meet them at Grey Cup week every year.

One other note, if Tom ever leaves Dartmouth, he might even find out that there is a lot more to do in the prairies than watch the hay grow. (note: a lot more wheat grown in the prairies than hay)

In closing, let me just leave old Tom with a statement oft heard during Grey Cup week. "The CFL's Alive and Well, the NFL can go to . . ."well, you get the picture.
