I'm assuming this is a club game that ends in eight ends, but my call
wouldn't differ, anyway, as you want to count in the even ends, if possible.
You rip the guard with the outturn. (Assuming right-handed throwers) An
inturn rip gives you the chance of crashing the guard onto the biter, which
you may need if you have to pick the rock on the button with your last shot.
Only VERY good teams will put up three consecutive guards as good as or
better than the one that's already there. It's halfway between the house
and the hog, bisecting the centreline, and it's gotta go. You daren't try
the pick now, as they can simply go around the guard again, and you're no
better off than you were two shots ago, and at this juncture, your biter is
good for nothing. And if you don't make the pick, you ARE fuc.. oops,
finished.

The in-off from your own with your last shot, is an iffy proposition, at
best, and if you freeze the yellow to get an angle, they'll simply guard
that.

Somehow, you have to manufacture a way to get the yellow off the top of the
button, as there isn't even a last-shot draw available. The runback's
probably no good, as your shooter is still going to cover part of the 4-ft,
unless you're Kevin Martin or Don Walchuk or Wayne Middaugh. (I've
discovered most of us aren't, even if we think otherwise at times.)

IMO, the guard has to go. And if it's a 10-end game, it gives you a chance
to score 2, which can be huge.

Interesting question, and I'd love to see other viewpoints on it.
