Actually,

Once a year on vasantotsav, Maharaja is supposed to walk to the temple
with his ahem family sceptre erect to pray for fertility of the soil.

This was exactly same as custom followed by pharaohs in ancient egypt,
aterides in ancient greece, even in medieval mesopotamia and parts of
africa and mesoamerica.
