try weighing two ferrules  of the same dimensions Phenolic and your
alternative ferrule...I think Aegis and Ivorene from atlas would weigh
less than the phenolic ferrule....

I use an 11.5 ferrule buffalo horn  (Black color) ....its very strong
when aged properly...its also very very light compared to
phenolics....I age mine for a year prior to use....I converted an old
11 mm playing cue to a break cue with this type of ferrule and I have
no problems since
