from today's Baltimore Sun Laura Harper, a highly regarded power forward from Wyncote, Pa., has given an oral commitment to Maryland's women's basketball program, choosing the Terps over national power Connecticut. Harper's father, Haviland, yesterday confirmed the decision made by his 6-foot-3 daughter, who averaged 21 points at Cheltenham High School in suburban Philadelphia last year and chose Maryland last week. Hers is the second commitment - after that of 6-3 center Jade Perry of Greenville, Ky. - garnered by Maryland coach Brenda Frese and her staff. Ranked as the nation's 14th-best high school senior by a recruiting newsletter, Harper is the third top-20 recruit to join the Terrapins in Frese's two-year tenure. Last year, guards Kalika France (No. 10) and Shay Doron (No. 19) signed and will begin playing with the program as freshmen next month. V "There is no such thing as accident.
