If there was a statement, it was something along the lines of "you
kicked our ass in the regular season and the playoffs last year, but
we're back, and we're gunning for you."

You can't get props without giving props, and the Spurs kicked the
Lakers butts all of last year. So thanks to them for sending the Laker
management a loud and clear statement about needing to revamp.
