Now, if the Lakers collapse or otherwise fail to fulfill expectations, blame will be thrown onto this petty squabble, instead of the real culprit: the inherent inability for a team stacked with aging and declining superstars to fit their games around each other enough to win. Yes, I said it: I don't think the Lakers have much chance to win more than 50, or excel in the playoffs -- with or without Kobe. Newsgroups: alt.sports.basketball.nba.la-lakers Date: 2003-10-27 19:15:09 PST I caught part of the games end of last week..... damn if it's going to be hard to "get into" this team...... you got 3 major whiners on the floor in Shaq, Elbow, and Payton.... of the 4 "Superstars" Payton is the only one I sort of like right now and that's bad news...... and Payton thus far does not look good in the triangle..... I'm still not an Elbow fan and Shaq's whining has finally hit home making me sick of his act.... it's old...... grow up, fat man.... I'll give Kobe kudos for telling it like it is about Fat $haq..... stop the whining and fingerpointing...... can this team win a championship??? I dunno..... it's an All Star team..... probably on paper one of the most talented in NBA history..... but it's not even near being a unified "team"....... it's preseason and there's plenty of time to develop it and Jackson is probably the only coach that would have a chance of pulling it off...... so, in a word, thus far: Unimpressed...... What team is listed in every review of off season moves as being the winner? Without exception, everyone, including those in here, have thought that the acquisition of Malone and Payton is huge? I agree that Payton is huge, I don't think Malone will live up to the hype. As far as whether he is overrated numerically, it depends on what you expect from him. But I don't expect the move to have results which will justify the amount of fanfare that he has recieved. That is why I will consider him ovverrated. If you expect nothing more than a 12-14 ppg guy and 6-8 rebounds, then he will probably live up to you expectation. I have never seen the number of headlines and feature articles, though, dedicated to getting a 14 and 8 guys (though the hooplah over Brad Miller was close). I wonder who will have a lower fg%, Kobe or LeBron? Will Phil Jackson start calling himself Dr. Phil? He is full enough of himself to do so. Gotta love the Lakers youth movement, Shaq, GP, Malone, Horace Grant. I'm surprised they didn't beg Brian Shaw to stay. Stunted growth of their future talent like Devean George and Luke Walton is just too sweet!
