Torre had his best season in 1971, the : first year he didn't catch. Carter was an excellent defensive catcher. It's a big difference, and I agree with everything else here that I clipped, but OTOH Torre is a perfectly legit HOF candidate (as a player). He's not as good a candidate as Carter -- Carter was a no-doubt HOFer, while Torre is more of a fringe candidate -- but I've always thought that Torre belonged. Of course, he'll wind up in now because of the managing. JHB
