I grew up a big Mets fan, and I loved Gary Carter (I had my picture taken with him at a Shea kids day in the mid 80's)... With that being said... I was going through some stats earlier and for some reason compared Torre's stats with Gary Carter's stats. For his career, Torre's average is .035 higher, with better on base and slugging percentages. Granted Torre didn't hit for power, but than again, Carter wasn't exactly a great power hitter either. And fielding percentage is virtually a wash. Is one of the edges Carter has the fact that he caught for virtually his entire career, whereas Torre eventually made the transition to the corners? Just though I'd bring this up for a possible discussion. Also, for what it's worth, I grew up a Yankee fan as well (on my father's side), but I'm not a huge fan of Torre as a manager. Mark Labozzetta - So, I'm new here.
