Current college football rules provide for unlimited overtimes. Each team gets one possession, starting on the opponent's 25 yard-line, in each overtime (analogous to extra innings in baseball, except the teams take turns "batting" first). Play continues until an overtime ends with something other than a tied score. [I believe that, starting with the third overtime, a team which scores a touchdown must attempt a two-point conversaion.]

FWLIW, I hate the overtime rule. I believe that ties are, and should be, part of college football (and also hockey).

Thanks for the reply, although it started more of an off-topic discussion than any of us probably anticipated here.

No one has yet answered my request for an explanation of what happened concerning Jack Nicklaus and its significance regarding ties. I realize that any such answer has the possibility of generating yet another lively but off-topic discussion, but I've still got my curiosity piqued as to what that golf-world happening was. Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer this.
