Medicine could advance to the point where 30- or 40-year careers would not be unusual. Managers' theory could change. Maybe besides a "closer" we'd have "winners," pitchers who are put into the game in the 4th inning when the team has the lead. Just as we no longer expect a starting pitcher to throw a complete game, maybe pitchers will become so delicate that even five innings is too much. So the guy pitching the middle three innings could pile up a lot of victories. Just like a Gagne today can get 55 saves out of a team's 85 wins.
